Motorcyclists to don helmets

The National Police confiscated over 3,400 motorcycles on the first day of its operative to oblige motorcyclists to use protective helmets. The Police had given the motorcyclists 10 days to purchase, or begin using, protective helmets. The deadline was 22 December. The Police has been successful in reducing the number of accidents by arresting, for a period of 48 hours, persons caught passing a red light. Now the Police wants to reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries by obliging motorcyclists to wear their helmets. The National Police is also confiscating motorcycles without mufflers, lights or those making unnecessary noises. The motorcycles are returned when the owners meet the requirements. The confiscations are expected to have the effect of making known that the National Police is serious about its requests, as in the case of its admonition not to pass red lights.
