Nickel price drop affects D.R.

The Dominican Republic stands to lose US$30 million this year due to the decline in the price of ferronickel. Ferronickel prices are down to their four-year low after Russia invaded the European market with scrap metal. Falconbridge Dominicana expects to produce 70 million pounds of ferronickel this year. From January to November of 1997, the company had net earnings of US$29,153,047, after paying US$29,015,773 in taxes. Earnings in 1998 could be wiped out if the international situation continues.
