The Dominican Republic lost to Russia, 3-0, but the totals of the games were 15-3, 15-8 and 15-1. The Russian team, where all players are over 6’4 tall, is along with Cuba, the most likely winner of the championship that is taking place in Japan. The DR volleyball team passed to the second round after defeating Germany in the C group. The DR entered the competition ranked 15th in the world. Its defeat of Germany, raised its ranking to 10th best in the world. The DR is one of four Latin American teams to pass on to the second round of competitions. The other Latin American teams are Brazil, Peru and Cuba, the defending champions of the event. The DR is now part of the E Group. Other teams in this group are Japan, Holland, Peru, Russia, Brazil and DR.
