Jacinto Peynado told El Siglo that he would compete with President Joaquín Balaguer for the presidential candidacy for the Partido Reformista Social Cristiano for the year 2000 elections. Peynado believes that the party should run on its own strengths and not ally with the PLD as the leader of the party, Dr. Joaquín Balaguer did in 1996. The support of Balaguer to the candidacy of Dr. Leonel Fernández was crucial to the Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD) winning the presidency in 1996.
