The Listín Diario has taken upon itself the reconstruction of the Parque Mirador del Sur, the city’s principal park, that is to Santo Domingo what Central Park is to New York City. The eight kilometers long by half a kilometer wide park is intensely used by walkers, volleyball players, cyclists, roller skaters, for picnics, and birthday parties. It lost about 30% of its trees during Hurricane Georges. The Department of Forestry plans to plant varieties of trees that proved to resistant to high winds.
