Hoy newspaper reports that so far this year 20 children have burned to death when their homes burned and they were unable to leave on time. Many of the children had been left alone by their parents that went out on errands. Over the weekend only, four children under five years died in similar circumstances. The Firemen of Santo Domingo issued an alert to parents to not leave their small children alone. There have been 145 fires from January to June, of this year in the city of Santo Domingo.
