Case against Jorge Blanco

The President of the Supreme Court of Justice, Jorge Subero Isa said that the dossier with the case for corruption against former President Salvador Jorge Blanco showed up along with 5,000 other cases pending in the judiciary. He said that the dossier was located by investigators of the Departamento de Inspectoría Judicial in the Penal Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice. The case had been sent to the Supreme Court for an opinion in 1993. Another part of the case was located at the Penal Chamber of the Court of Appeals of Santo Domingo, as confirmed Dr. José Arturo Uribe. Salvador Jorge Blanco governed the DR from 1982-86. Lawyer Marino Vinicio Castillo accused him in Dominican courts in 1987 for malversion of funds and overpriced government purchases. He was sentenced by Judge Juan María Severino in 1989 to 20 years in prison and RD$103 million in fines. He served from 30 November 1988 to 6 July 1989 when he was released on bail. The sentence was appealed and on 27 August 1993 the Penal Chamber of the Court of Appeals of Santo Domingo sent the case to the Supreme Court of Justice for an opinion. The case had political implications as it was the first time a case for corruption in government became a major national issue. The press has headlined about the interest of several in reactivating the cases of HydroQuebec (a major corruption case in the Balaguer administration), or the older case of the assassination of Hector Mendez, which involved the today president of the PRD, Hatuey Decamps.
