El Siglo/Penn, Schoen & Berland poll revealed that leading opposition party presidential candidate Hipólito Mejía would win the presidential election in year 2000 regardless of who his rival would be. The survey showed Mejía would achieve 57% in a June second round, versus 34% of Danilo Medina, the presidential candidate of the ruling Partido de la Liberación Dominicana. The survey showed if Joaquín Balaguer of the Partido Reformista Social Cristiano were his contender in the second round, Mejía would obtain 57% of the votes, versus 37% of Balaguer. The survey shows that in the unlikely case that Mejía did not make it to the second round, Balaguer would defeat Medina 42% to 30%.
