In an interview with El Caribe newspaper, Antonio Cocco, a former long time director of the Dominican Weather Department and today professor of climatology at the Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña explained about the rainy and dry seasons in the DR. He said that historically, January, February and March have been the driest months of the year for the South and East Coasts (Santo Domingo, Boca Chica, Juan Dolio, La Romana and Punta Cana-Bavaro destinations). For the North Coast, the driest months are June, July and August. Cocco said that there has been no drought for the past 18 months. He did say that rainfall has declined as of December. (3 March 2000)
