According to former Santo Domingo mayor, Rafael Corporan de los Santos, the widow of PRD leader, Jose Francisco Peña Gomez, would be a good choice to replace Milagros Ortiz Bosch as Senator from the National District (Santo Domingo and environs). On August 16, Ortiz Bosch will be sworn in as the nation’s vice president, creating a mid-term vacancy. Corporan, a millionaire broadcasting executive who hosts his own weekly TV variety show, made the proposal in a letter to PRD Party President, Hatuey De Camps. According to Corporan, if Doña Peggy Cabral de Peña, who currently occupies the elected post of Deputy Mayor of Santo Domingo, were to become a senator, "she would be guided from heaven" by the spirit of her husband. Corporan, who himself has been widely discussed as a senatorial replacement, was writing to De Camps to decline the appointment. His letter goes on to explain that "this being an elective office, I would only be sworn in if elected by popular vote."
