National District to be divided into administrative districts

The government of Hipolito Mejia will fulfill one of his campaign promises by dividing the National District (Santo Domingo and environs) into at least four administrative districts. The announcement was made by Hatuey de Camps, president of Mejia’s PRD Party, on the TV program, "Hoy Mismo."The idea of decentralizing municipal functions was first articulated during the 1996 presidential campaign by PRD candidate Jose Francisco Peña Gomez. The object of such a move would be to minimize the mayoral span of control, and bring services closer to the citizenry. De Camps noted that Manila, the Philippine capital, is divided into 17 service districts, so four in the case of Santo Domingo would be a minimum.
