The Senate passed a bill yesterday that seeks to enforce provisions to increase employment and education opportunities, while making mobility easier for those in wheel chairs. At present, while there is legislation that obliges architects to incorporate provisions such as access ramps, this is not being fulfilled. The bill reinforces the present legislation. The Listín Diario newspaper reports that today only banks have fulfilled minimum conditions for those in wheel chairs to carry out normal activities. The Dominican Rehabilitation Association (ADR) says there are 700,000 persons in the DR (400,000 in Santo Domingo) with special needs, or about 10% of the population.
