Listin Diario reported that Omar Santiago Cabrera, who has been in jail in Najayo since September 1999 for the possession of 429 kilograms of cocaine, managed to escape yesterday from his custodians. Cabrera had been taken to the Ciudad Nueva court for a hearing on his case. Instead of returning to the jail on the bus, he left in a taxi accompanied by two police officers. He was not handcuffed. The Police arrested Lieutenant Antonio Páez who authorized that he be allowed to supposedly visit a newborn child prior to returning to the penitentiary. The newspaper says that the taxi was intercepted at Calle Jimaní of uptown Espaillat neighborhood by four masked individuals (one was killed another injured by one of the custodians and arrested) and Cabrera escaped. A woman who boarded the taxi with a cellular and placed a call to find out "if the food was ready" accompanied him.
