Five drug dealers buy their way out of jail

The Listín Diario newspaper says that so far this year, five drug traffickers have escaped from their custodians. Cesar Pina Toribio, legal consultant to the Executive Branch, and National District Attorney General Francisco Domínguez Brito, demanded an in depth investigation of the security staff at Najayo prison and Ciudad Nueva Courthouse after the latest escape this week. Domínguez urged the creation of a Penitentiary Police that would avoid similar situations. The escape of Omar Santiago Cabrera, who is being tried for drug trafficking charges, raised nationwide attention to the vulnerability of the custodians. Cabrera was allowed to board a taxi to do an "errand" instead of taking the assigned bus back to the jail with other inmates. See www.dr1.com/daily/news060800.shtml
