The Senate converted into law a bill that establishes that the Bible be read at least once a week in public schools after the raising of the flag and the signing of the national anthem. Three of the 19 senators present abstained from voting in protest that the bill did not oblige private schools to do the same. The senators say that listening to the Bible cannot hurt any one and hope that it will contribute to reduce delinquency and violence. The programs and methods for teaching the Bible will be proposed by the Conferencia del Espiscopado Dominicano (Roman Catholic Church) and the Confederación Dominicana de la Unidad Evangélica (Protestant Church).
