President Leonel Fernandez said that he will continue to promote the immersion of the Dominican Republic in the information age after leaving office in August. He spoke at the inauguration of the first virtual community, that is part of the Lince or Pequeñas Comunidades Inteligentes program. He would like to see small and far away communities in the Dominican Republic technologically communicated with the world. The new virtual community inaugurated in Bohechío in the Southwest offers Bohechío inhabitants access to telemedicine, email, educational material, video conferencing, among other services. The unit was set up at a cost of RD$2.8 million. "Sometimes people ask what I plan to do when I leave the Presidency, and I tell them that during the next four years I will be removing oceans, skies and earth to seek out all the friends I have made around the world and request their help to install projects such as this one in every community of the Dominican Republic," he said. President Fernández also said that the first phase of the Santo Domingo Cyberpark, a high tech park going up near the Las Americas International Airport, will be ready to open 5 August. President Fernández has preached incessantly the need for the DR to immerse itself in the information age.
