Mejía also spoke with Glickman about the possibility of finding mechanisms to reduce the US$400 million debt accumulated from the 70s and 80s PL480 programs. Glickman reportedly said he was not up to date on this. Then Glickman asked Mejía his secret for going from being like him a Secretary of Agriculture to his next job in government, President of the Republic. Mejía responded, "After 16 August, when you resolve that matter, I’ll tell you the secret to see if you too can make it."
