There is talk in the press of the creation of another government ministry the Secretaría de Transporte. This follows in line with other ministries of recent creation, such as the Ministry of Culture, and the ministries of Environment and Youth that also could be forthcoming this year. Congress is on a spur of creating new government departments. The idea behind the Ministry of Transportation is to centralize the five government agencies that deal with transport in one government department. Hamlet Hermann, who had the task of implementing the Metropolitan Transport Authority (AMET) project, considered one of the major achievements of the Fernández government, promotes the idea. Hoy reported that Hermann promoted the visit of several leading US transport authority experts to meet with local institutions and discuss the project. They met with President Leonel Fernandez and the president of the Senate Ramon Alburquerque. The visiting transport experts included: Howard Permut, vice president of the New York City Metroplitan Transport Authority Sonia Rivera, regional director of the Department of Transportation of Long Island Eliot Sanders, senior vice president Frederic R. Harris, Inc. Ron Hartman, vice president Yellow Transportation of Baltimore Elisa Vanderlinde of the Transport Office of New York Jose Holguin Veras, professor at the New York City College.
