Hoy newspaper reports that from 2 January to 23 June of this year, 34 Dominicans were killed in 39 traffic accidents along the Las Americas Highway. This highway leads from and into Santo Domingo, from the East of the country, including the Las Americas International Airport. Most of the accidents occurred between Kms. 7 and 32 of the highway. Of the 54 persons that suffered injuries in traffic accidents, 14 were riding on motorcycles. Several others that did not die were maimed for life. The accidents were attributed to speeding, driving under the effects of alcohol, slippery highway conditions when it rains, lack of adequate lighting and forced stops due to flat tires.
