Unión Fenosa may have to stand trial in Spain for fraud

Radhames Segura, general administrator of the state electricity utility, said that the Dominican government is following an alleged case of fraud that could take Unión Fenosa to the courts in Spain. Unión Fenosa, which for many years was managerial consultant to the CDE, won the largest contract for distribution of power supplied in the DR. According to the Spanish Interviú magazine, Union Fenosa, Endesa and Iberdrola could face a suit for participating for years, together with manufacturers of electricity counters, in the alteration of the Spanish consumers’ electricity bills. A fraud of US$11,000 million, affecting over 20 million persons, is being talked about. In the Dominican Republic, Unión Fenosa affiliates Edenorte and Edesur have been in the limelight accused of charging more than the power served. Yolanda Suoto, spokesperson for the company, said that Interviu was not a very credible magazine.
