President-elect Hipólito Mejía said that on 16 August he would replace Mariano Germán appointed by the PLD adminitration to preside the Dominican Telecommunications Instiutte (Indotel). The Telecommunications Law establishes that the president of the organization cannot be removed for four years. Mejía told the press: "I am going to remove Germán from day one. Even if it is in violation of the Constitution, don’t worry, I will remove him. There is nothing to discuss." In Mejía’s opinion, President Fernández showed "a lack of respect" when he appointed a new president of Indotel just 2-1/2 months before handing in the Presidency. Germán was appointed after Guillermo Sued resigned. At stake are political and multimillion business interests. The Legal Counsellor to the Executive Branch, Cesar Pina Toribio described the the President-elect’s comment as "absurd."
