National Basketball Team Sub-21 defeated Canada in the Panamerican Tournament being held in Riberao Preto, Brazil. The tournament will classify three teams for the World Basketball Games set for Saitama, Japan in August 2001. The DR won a slot in the Pan Am tournament by winning the gold in the recently ended Central American and Caribbean Basketball Championship held in Panama. The Dominican team won the first half 53-33 and maintained its lead throughout. Team members are: Wilkins Bonilla, Wilkins Tavarez, Emil Monegro, Luis Flores, Benito Flores, Juan Rivera, Walter Snirple, Randy Guzman, Eulis Baez, Jack Michael Martinez, Carlos Morban and Amaurys Filion. Coaches are Jose Dominguez and Victor Hansen. The DR squad faces Puerto Rico today at 2:30 pm, and Brazil tomorrow at 9 pm. The semifinals will be held Saturday stating at 1 pm. And the finals will be disputed on Sunday.
