300 left roofless in Santiago fire

A large fire destroyed 56 shacks in Los Guandules slum of Santiago. The zinc-covered shacks had wooden structures, but carton walls and dirt floors. Most of the occupants were rural immigrants who had moved to Santiago recently. Haitians and Dominicans alike lived there. News reports say it took the firemen three hours to control the flames. The authorities estimate about 300 were left roofless.
