The first tropical storm of the 2000 season formed today, Tropical Storm Alberto was located near latitude 12.4 North. longitude 25.0 West or about 170 miles, 270 kms. South-Southwest of the southernmost Cape Verde Island in Africa. Alberto is moving west at 17 mph or 28 km/hr. Forecasters say the tropical storm could become a hurricane in a couple of days. Most storms affecting the DR develop in the Atlantic Ocean near Africa and take about two weeks to reach the Caribbean Basin. Thus, there is ample lead-time, which enables those that could be affected to closely track the hurricanes. In this age of the Internet this is easy to do.
