Ex-presidents meet

Just 24 hours after leaving office, former president Leonel Fernandez made a call on two other former presidents. At 11:00 a.m. the 46-year old former chief executive arrived at the Santo Domingo home of Joaquin Balaguer to express his ?friendship, greetings and gratitude for the support he gave me in second round of voting in the 1996 elections, and also for his understanding in support of my presidency.? Fernandez was elected four years ago after a first-round voting stalemate produced an alliance between his PLD party and Balaguer?s PRSC. Emerging from his 45-minute interview, Fernandez said he found the 94 year old patriarch ?physically in fine condition? and ?lucid.? Departing Balaguer?s house, Fernandez drove to the home of 91-year old ex-president Juan Bosch, whose health has been poor in recent weeks.
