PRD political agreement affects government

News reports say that the political agreement signed in 1998 with several town mayors and congressmen is affecting government today. The Partido Revolucionario Dominicano came up with the so-called 2 x 2 formula in the 1998 congressional and municipal election in order to guarantee a unified position in that election. Then party leader Jose Francisco Peña Gómez convinced aspirants to government posts to accept a reduced term, and share it with another party aspirant. The term is up now, but several of the congress people and municipal employees do not want to resign their posts, as they agreed to do at the time. News reports say this is affecting municipal government and congressional affairs. Regarding the Chamber of Deputies, the branch of congress where the problem is mostly felt, news reports say that sessions will be postponed through 29 August to give the party time to find jobs for those that will be out or to convince these to follow the agreements.
