La Vega Free Zone reaches agreements with power company

The Association of Free Zones of La Vega reached an agreement with Edenorte, the power distributor. The businessmen of the zone had returned their power bills to the company, an affiliate of Unión Fenosa of Spain, citing these were excessive and did not reflect the long hours of blackouts the companies had been subject to in May and June. Solano Liz, a spokesman for the free zone companies, said that after meeting with executives of Edenorte, it was agreed that the meters of the free zone plants would be revised and excessive billing corrected. The company also agreed to install new digital meters and assist with the training of free zone personnel in charge of verifying the readings of these by Edenorte personnel. Edenorte also agreed to assist the companies with implementing power usage reduction programs. The free zone industries said a free zone employee would be responsible for checking the reading of all the meters, and confirming the readings made by Edenorte personnel. Furthermore, Edenorte guaranteed power supply would improve in two months time when a 87.5 megawatt plant under construction by Union Fenosa would start operations.
