Police chief Pedro de Jesus Candelier confirmed that he is intervening as "mediator" in the political impasse between the Juan Quiñones, present mayor of Haina, a town west of Santo Domingo and Juan Benito Reyes (Maniquí) who aspires to be the mayor of Haina. The problem is traced back to the political agreement reached in 1998 during the municipal elections by then PRD political leader Jose Francisco Peña Gómez. Peña Gómez, in order to maintain the unity of the party, split the duration of PRD men in several municipal and congressional posts. Quiñones, though, does not want to resign, and says he was elected for four years not two. Maniquí is counting on the intervention of the Chief of the Police to enforce the political agreement. Police Chief Candelier says that he is intervening as he sees the role as the Police as a proactive one, one close to the community to help resolve its problems.
