DR delegation to Sydney Games

President Hipólito Mejía received the 27-member Dominican delegation to the Sydney Olympic Games at the National Palace and handed these the national flag. The Dominican Republic will compete in judo, boxing, track and field, swimming and weight-lifting. Architect Hector Duval is the head of the Dominican delegation. Judo: Jose Vicbart Geraldino, Jose Augusto Geraldino, Eleocadia Vargas, Juan Carlos Jacinto, Jose Eugenio Vásquez Boxing: Yovanny Lorenzo, Jerson Ravelo, Jose Cabrera Swimming: Guillermo Cabrera Track & Field: Yeolin Santa, Felix Sanchez Weightlifting: Wanda Rijo, Playter Reyes Others on the delegation are the Minister of Sports Cesar Cedeño; Dr. José Joaquín Puello, president of the Dominican Olympic Committee; Luisín Mejía, secretary of the Dominican Olympic Committee. Also Dr. Juan Niemen, physician, Jesus Silverio, masseuse. Completing the delegation are a trainer and a delegate per sport. Sports writers say that Felix Sánchez, who will compete in the 400-meter hurdle race, and weightlifter Wanda Rijo have the best chances at grabbing a medal. The delegation leaves 11 September for Sydney.
