El Caribe newspaper reported that the president of the Dominican Telecommunications Institute, Indotel, Orlando Jorge Mera announced tenders will be held to choose companies to install telephone service in rural areas, install community telecommunications centers and install Internet service in public libraries from 2001-2003. He said that despite the boom in telecommunications service in the DR, so far only 39% of households enjoy telephone service. He said that the state regulatory agency will encourage greater levels of competition. Nevertheless he said that increased competition is not determined by the number of players, but rather is the result of the dynamic technological innovations in the industry. He spoke at a workshop organized by Codetel, the leader in telecommunications services in the DR.
