The Central Bank authorized a devaluation of the peso of 35 points. The official rate for dollars is now RD$16.40 to the dollar. President of the American Chamber of Commerce, banker Andres Aybar said that the devaluation will affect import prices because customs taxes and the exchange surcharged are pegged to the official rate. He also said that interest rates on loans could increase about 2 percentile points.
