DR delegation to Sydney Games

The official Dominican delegation to the Sydney Olympic Games leaves today. The DR will compete in five sports — judo, boxing, track & field, weightlifting and swimming. The official delegation is as follows: Jose Joaquin Puello, president of the Dominican Olympic Committee Luisín Mejía, Secretary of the Dominican Olympic Committee Hector Duval, head of the missin Antonio Acosta, deputy head of the mission Ivonne Broberg, assistant Jaime Casanova, administrative director Juan A. Niemen, medical director Jesus Silverio, physiotherapist Sports Track and Field Felix Sanchez (400 meter/hurdles) Joelin Santa (200 meter dash Andres Polimar, delegate Boxing Jerson Ravelo (165 lbs.) Jovanny Lorenzo (147 lbs.) Juan Jose Ubaldo Cabrera (156 lbs.) Luciano Ramirez, coach Juan Vargas, delegate Judo Juan Carlos Jacinto (100 kilos) Jose Vicbart Geraldino (60 kilos) Jose Augusto Geraldino (100 kilos) Eugenio Vasquez (100 kilos) Eleucadia Vargas (63 kilos) Pedro Figueroa, coach Juan Chalas, delegate Swimming Guillermo Cabrera (100 & 200 meter backstroke) Wilfrido Perdomo coach Lilian Jacobs de Solano, delegate Weightlifting Wanda Rijo (75 kilos) Playter Reyes (90 kilos) Felix Francisco Ogando, Coach William Ozuna, delegate Others on the Dominican delegation are Minister of Sports Cesar Cedeño, and several members that are working on the organization of the Pan American Games such as Joelle Schad, Colonel Luis González Tejeda, José Carrasco, Arthur Valdez, and Leonardo Macarrulla. Roque Napoleón Muñoz will be accompanying the delegation invited by the International Olympic Committee. Bienvenido Solano, president of the Dominican Boxing Federation will be traveling as a member of the boxing arbitrage committee. News reports mention that Carlos José Cordero and Nathali Sallent have been invited to participate in the delegation as special guests. The Dominican Republic first participated in an Olympic Games in 1964, when runner Alberto Torres represented it. At the time, Torres traveled to Japan with Juan Ulises García Saleta (Wiche), as delegate. The late Pedro Julio Nolasco is the only Dominican to have won an Olympic medal. He won a bronze in the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 1984.
