Public has right to know results of universities evaluation

Hoy newspaper editorial criticizes the decision of the Consejo Nacional de Educacion Superior to not make public findings of the "Evaluación Diagnóstico Quinquenal" study on the present state of universities and other higher learning institutions in the DR. Hoy is not satisfied with the explanation of CONES that that its role is not to diminish the prestige of these institutions. Hoy newspaper, says that the government institution would do a better service to the consumer if it makes available the findings. This information, it says, will help high school graduates choose where they will continue their studies. "Cones has the obligation to release those reports to the general public. These are not matters that affect the national security, as if it were another DNI [referring to the National Department of Investigations]," says the newspaper in an editorial today. Mariano Defilló, rector of the UNPHU, a local private university, says that he believes that while the universities should know the results first, afterwards the information can be made public by CONES. "The goal of universities is to serve the community, and the community should know what services they can obtain at each of the universities and the quality of services being offered," he said.
