Trujillo houses to be put to use

Senator Domingo Antonio Rosario Pimentel of San Cristóbal says that the Mejía administration will put to use three abandoned Trujillo-time edifices located in that southern province. Castillo del Cerro, Casa de Caoba and the beach house in Najayo may soon see better days. He said that the Castillo del Cerro would be assigned to the Ministry of the Armed Forces that will use it for a school. The environs will be declared a National Park. The Ministry of Culture will take over the Casa de Caoba where a museum with artifacts belonging to the Trujillo family or era will be exhibited. Rosario explained the museum will not honor the late dictator Leonidas Rafael Trujillo Molina, but rather will serve to preserve the heritage of a segment of Latin American history of which Trujillo was an important part. The Casa de Najayo, a beach house, could become a restaurant specializing in Dominican food. (13 September 2000)
