Dominican boxer to match Australian champion

Dominican boxer Jerson Ravelo (75 kilos-165 lbs.) will fight Australian southpaw Paul Miller. Miller, 21, won the 1999 Liverpool (UK) Multi-Nation Tournament and is a three-times Australian champion and dual Oceania title holder, despite cracking a rib at the 2000 Australian Championships. Just making it to the Sydney Olympics has been a major achievement for Miller, whose career nearly ended in 1996 when spinal stress fractures sidelined him for more than a year. The Brisbane (Queensland) fighter placed sixth at last year’s World Championships in Houston, Texas, and has previously fought in the 67kg category. Dominican boxer Ravelo is the most veteran of the three Dominicans that will compete in boxing in the Olympics. In 1998 he represented the US in a World Superior Boxing Tournament held in Houston, Texas. He did not win a medal, but won a bout. For several years, he was champion of the Golden Gloves Tournament held in the US. In 1998 he won gold medal in the Copa Cheo Aponte of Puerto Rico. Last year he won a gold in the Copa Independencia. He has participated in two of the three pre-Olympic tournaments, winning bronze in the first and gold in the second. Twenty-three year old, 6-2′ Ravelo is a native of San Cristóbal. The other boxers are Yovanny Lorenzo (67 kilograms-147 lbs.) will match a Pakistan boxer. Juan Jose Ubaldo Cabrera (63.5 kg-139 lbs.) will match an Australian.
