The Listín Diario reports that a 102.5 megawatt power plant built by Union Fenosa, the Spanish firm, will be fully operational by the second week of October. The plant, located in Palamara, National District, is a RD$1,248 million investment and has been generating 80 megawatts in its trial period, according to the news item. The plant is expected to benefit 200,000 users in Santo Domingo and the south of the country. Unión Fenosa has also announced that another power plant, the 87.5 megawatt soon to go into operation in La Vega at a US$66 million investment, will supply the Cibao central region. The construction and operation of both plants has stirred controversy. Can a company that had won the bid to distribute power, be building power plants? Unión Fenosa has two affiliates in the DR, Edenorte and Edesur. This would not be a first. AES, the other power distributor, also operates major power plants in Santo Domingo.
