Reopening of the Jorge Blanco-De Camps/Hector Méndez case

After five years dormant, Judge Francisco Ortega Polanco has opened the Hector Méndez murder case. He has required that former President Salvador Jorge Blanco and former Secretary of the Presidency Hatuey de Camps come forth for questioning regarding the death of Hector Méndez 15 years ago. Also involved in the same case is Méndez’s chauffeur Napoleón Reyes and the Cruz Galvez brothers. Méndez and his driver were kidnapped on 4 January 1985, their bodies found two days later. The Cruz Galvez brothers were murdered in the Los Mina neighborhood on 10 June 1985. The two cases have been linked. The lawyers of Jorge Blanco and De Camps seek to invalidate the judge on grounds of Judge Ortega being politically partial to the PLD. They say that now that the PRD government in power has been critical to PLD former government officers, the case is brought back to put the spotlight on the PRD. Judge Ortega was appointed in 1998 when most of the judges were replaced.
