The DR is about to begin to benefit from the Caricom Fisheries Resource Assessment and Management Program as part of the Integrated Regional Program for the Fisheries and Farming Development of the Caribbean, sponsored by the European Union under Lomé IV. The Dominican Republic’s new Minister of Environment Frank Moya Pons signed the agreement under which the DR will receive a first disbursement of US$518,000. This is a five year program that doesn’t require a counterpart on behalf the Dominican government. Hugh Saul and Milton Haughton, director of the Fishing Unit of Caricom visited to sign the agreement. The program promotes sustainable development of fishing resources in the region.
