Just hours after the director of the Oficina Técnica del Transporte Terrestre, Antonio Reynoso had warned that he was about to confiscate yellow taxis "pollitos" (baby chicks) that had been distributed to persons that were not taxi drivers before, President Hipólito Mejía announced that those that had their pollitos could keep them. "The people that have their "pollito", I am giving instructions that they should not be molested," said President Mejía. He made the announcement after visiting José Tomás Pérez, secretary general of the PLD. Legal consultant of the Executive Branch, Guido Gómez Mazara, a close friend of Pérez, accompanied him. The President did say that those that had been assigned 10 pollitos should return eight, or reach an agreement with the new authorities. Reportedly, President Mejía visited Pérez to seek the PLD support on the package of economic measures the government will soon send to Congress.
