The Dominican Professional Baseball League 2000-2001 Winter Season begins tomorrow, Friday 20 October with games scheduled for Santo Domingo, San Pedro de Macorís and San Francisco de Macorís. The Dominican league is made up of two eastern-based teams (La Romana and San Pedro), two central-based teams (San Francisco and Santiago) and two Santo Domingo-based teams. This year is an especially good year to go to a ball game. Several of the stadiums have been remodeled, including the La Romana, Santiago, San Pedro de Macorís and Santo Domingo stadiums. The Friday, 20 October 8 pm opening games are: San Pedro de Macorís: Miguel Batista of the La Romana Toros faces Mike Saipe of the Estrellas Orientales at the Estadio Tetelo Vargas. Santo Domingo: Amaury Telemaco of the Leones del Escogido faces Manny Aybar of the Tigres del Licey at the Estadio Quisqueya. San Francisco de Macorís: Fernando Hernández of the Aguilas Cibaeñas confronts Efraim Valdez of the Pollos del Cibao at the Estadio Julián Javier. The season will last through January, with the winning teams going on to play in the Caribbean Series that takes place early in February.
