A high ranking official of the Santo Domingo Autonomous University (UASD) revealed that ?irregularities? have been detected in the granting of degrees. Ramon Valerio, Secretary of the UASD Corporation, said that the Registrar?s Office suspects that degrees have been presented to some students who have not earned them. Valerio refused to provide further details, but stated that a special investigative committee, headed by the UASD President, Miguel Rosado, has been formed. With an enrollment of 125,000 students, the UASD is the largest – as well as the only public – university in the country. It is also the oldest university in the Western Hemisphere, having been founded by a Papal Bull in 1538.
