Authorities move to reclaim green areas

The Santo Domingo City Manager (Secretario General del Ayuntamiento del Distrito Nacional), Luis Jose Chavez, met with Santo Doming District Attorney, Maximo Aristy Caraballo, and National Chief Of Police, Pedro De Jesus Candelier, to plan the measures they will take to recuperate various green areas of the capital. City Hall is making an inventory of green areas at risk, and will set up a telephone number to receive complaints from individuals and civic groups about abuses on parklands.  According to Chavez, ?the mayor is very concerned about encroachments on public lands by various subterfuges.? He cited several examples of the misuse of lands. The seaside fringe along the 30th of May Highway, has been invaded by small businesses. In the Almirante section, an entire street has disappeared beneath construction for an expanding hardware business. A clinic and an auto repair shop have usurped green space in the Villa Duarte neighborhood. Some one has placed a sign reading ?this lot for sale? on yet another piece of public park, said Chavez.
