General required to explain his income sources

The ex-Director of Civil Defense, Army General Jose Antonio de los Santos Sanchez has been asked to explain the origins of his assets. The general, who submitted a financial statement last August, as required by law, raised eyebrows when he reported a net worth in excess of DR$23 million (around US$1.4 million). ?No one is accusing him of anything yet,? said special anti-corruption prosecutor, Jesus Feliz Jimenez, but ?his declaration presents an amount of wealth that does not correspond with his income level.? De los Santos Sanchez has stated that he was quite accustomed to receiving ?gifts.? Nevertheless, Jimenez noted that he will require a list of ?givers? who will all be required to explain their reasons. Besides the value of homes, properties, furnishings and cash held by De los Santos Sanchez, he has also reported that he owns a DR$800,000 boat, a Toyota Prado valued at DR$1.1 million, a Ford Explorer, a Mack truck and a light truck.
