Jorge Ivan Ramirez will fill the presidency of the nation?s oldest and largest telephone company, which has been vacant since March. The announcement was made by Fares Salloum, head of the Americas division of Verizon Corporation, Codetel?s parent. Verizon is the company formed by the union of GTE and Bell Atlantic, which took place this past summer. Ramirez is a native of Medellin, Colombia, and currently serves as head of one of that country?s leading telecommunications companies. He has twenty years of progressive managerial experience in the telecommunications field. Codetel, created a half century ago by GTE Corporation, was the DR?s only telephone company until 1992. Now it is just one, if the largest, in the DR?s highly competitive telecommunications environment.
