Two students lost their lives, and another four are reported missing, as a result of the sudden flooding of the Fula River in Bonao. The six were in a party of ten who had gone to visit the Northeast city of San Francisco de Macoris to celebrate the graduation of one of them. Upon their return, they decided to stop at a popular swimming area. The heavy rains that fell throughout the entire island yesterday were especially strong in the Cibao region. They caused the sudden swelling of the Fula River that took the lives of Dagoberto Martinez and Evelyn Gaton, both 24. Four of the other swimmers were swept downstream and have not been recovered. The remaining four are hospitalized in Bonao. Recent, continual, heavy rains have caused millions of pesos of damage to crops, and left hundreds homeless in the Cibao region, due to flooding.
