Two Haitian officers granted asylum in Ecuador

During remarks made under pouring rain in Dajabon, President Hipolito Mejia announced that two of the seven policemen who have been living as ?guests? of the Dominican Armed Services Ministry for the past two and a half weeks have been given asylum in Ecuador. According to Mejia, the government is trying to negotiate asylum for the remaining five who have been accused of having planned an unsuccessful coup against the Haitian government. Mejia expressed confidence that Ecuador will extend asylum to them because, he said, their safety cannot be assured if they were to be extradited to Haiti.
