Not content with yesterday?s salvo against Education Ministry officials or with the exchange of accusations with the Minister published today, El Siglo this morning enlarged its campaign for an improved school breakfast, by presenting the results of its investigation of the program in Santiago. ?Hundreds of children receive no breakfast and dozens of schools have been excluded.? Two reporters from El Siglo, Nereyda Feliz and Isabel Guzman, toured schools in municipalities adjacent to the country?s second city and found that in case after case, the number of servings provided for the schools fell short of the enrollments, sometimes by hundreds. Yesterday?s findings were based largely on research conducted at schools in Santo Domingo. The newspaper asks what has become of the plan to serve schoolchildren ?eggs and mangu? (mashed plantains), as promised by President Hipolito Mejia in the recent electoral campaign.?
