German relents; meets with prosecutor

Following yesterday?s headline-making show of ?solidarity,? Alexandrina German left her home on Thursday and quietly presented herself at the office of the Attorney General, Virgilio Bello Rosa who, together with Special Anti-Corruption Prosecutor, Jesus Lopez Jimenez, examined her for three hours. German explained her 180-degree change of position, saying, ?I cannot permit the Dominican public to continue listening to this furor in the communication media.? Yesterday, as dozens of PLD Party supporters thronged her home in support of her refusal to appear before the special prosecutor, German declared that she would only appear if taken by force. However, when she arrived at the Justice Ministry last night, she came voluntarily, without handcuffs or a military escort. Her brother, Mario German, a former Attorney General, who serves as her lawyer, accompanied her. German commented that she hoped that the issue of the scholarships would no longer be front-page news when the time came for the country to focus on the new tax proposals soon to be unveiled by the government. German has been accused by the Legal Counsel to the President, Guido Gomez Masara, of improprieties in the administration of a U.S. scholarship program.
