Mejia says he cannot forgive corruption or featherbedding

President Hipolito Mejia said that he has ?never been corrupt,? and has no tolerance for corruption. For this reason, he will not intervene in judicial processes that may lead to the punishment of wrongdoers. Mejia also said that there are ?sufficient arguments? to indict functionaries of the previous government. The prosecution of corruption, he said ?is the obligation of my campaign and the obligation of my life, and I cannot excuse the failure to punish? corruption. Referring to his PRD Party?s fourteen years out of power, Mejia said, ?many people for past conflicts or complexes? want to rush to judgment, but although ?I was in the opposition for many years, I am respectful of those who were in government.?  The President also described as ?a thing of the past? the days of no-show or non-productive public employees. Mejia made his remarks during a visit to the offices of the Dominican Port Authority, where he listened to presentations from its top officials about plans and problems of the country?s ports and terminals. Nassim Alemany, one of its directors said that no head of state had ever visited the port authority before.
