El Siglo publishes big salaries of Pan Am Committee

El Siglo newspaper revealed more details on the hefty payroll of the Pan American Games Organizing Committee. Others on the payroll are architect Hector Duval, who is also president of the Sailing Federation, RD$35,000. Engineer Jaime Casanova, president of the Judo Federation, RD$35,000. Leonardo Monsanto, in charge of human resources for the Games, RD$26,000, who is president of the Tae Kwon Do Federation. Antonio Acosta, director of lodging for the Games, president of the Wrestling Federation, RD$20,000. Nelson Ramirez, secretary general of the Dominican Volleyball Federation, RD$30,000. Milton Pinedo, medical director of the games, RD$45,000, president of the Sports Medicine Federation. The newspaper had revealed earlier that the Organizing Committee had a payroll of almost RD$10 million, and that according to sources this amount would soon be increased. The Pan Am Games are scheduled to be held in July 2003 in Santo Domingo. El Siglo points out that several of the committees for which the executives are being paid are not yet operational. After the appearance of the stories in El Siglo, the Dominican Olympic Committee announced that salaries of those making RD$20,000-RD$45,000 would be adjusted. El Siglo says that the COD admitted it is not ethical that the presidents of sports federations receive salaries from the organizing committee of the Games. Following the appearance of the articles, President Hipólito Mejía had requested an adjustment of the salaries of the employees of the Olympic Committee.
